Mar. 30—BROOKINGS — In the second-to-last indoor meet of the season, the Mitchell High School track and field team grabbed multiple second-place finishes at the Ruth Marske Invitational on Saturday in Brookings.
On the boys side, Alexier Padilla played a role in both of Mitchell's second-place finishes. He was the only individual top-five finisher for the Kernels, coming in second place in the 400-meter run (51.02). The team of Padilla, Hunter Patton, Floyd Korzan and Ben Gerlach finished second in the 4x800-meter relay (8:14.99).
Patton also claimed a top-10 individual place with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:02.69). Kellen Odell was the other top-10 finisher for the boys, coming in seventh in the triple jump, clearing 37 feet, 7 inches. Out of 24 boys teams, the Kernels came in 14th.
On the girls side, Keyana Kelley was Mitchell's highest individual finisher, coming in sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (48.53). The Kernel squad of Kelley, Avrie London, Ava Brannan and Addie Siemsen finished 10th in the 4x100-meter relay (51.20).
Taylor DeJong ended up in seventh in the shot put with a top throw of 36 feet, 8 inches. Londyn Schroeder was Mitchell's other top-10 finisher, coming in eighth in the 1,600-meter run. The girls finished in 19th place as a team.
The Kernels have one more indoor meet on the schedule, the Dakota Wesleyan High School Open on Tuesday, April 1. Indoor meet times and marks do not count for state meet qualification at the end of the season.
