In the Boston Celtics' victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night, superstar Jayson Tatum picked up his 13th technical foul of the season, leaving him with three more before he receives a one-game suspension. Tatum showed frustration after he believed he was fouled on a no-call by Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr, and referee Tony Brothers quickly assessed Tatum with a technical.
This was the second game on the road trip in which Tatum received a technical, picking up one in last week's win over the Portland Trail Blazers as well. Speaking to the media after Monday's win, Tatum addressed how he has to handle the line between venting frustration and avoiding getting any more technicals on the season.
Asked by Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe about how he'll manage moving forward, Tatum says he has yet to figure out when the refs decide to hand out technical fouls.
"Depending on the night, some things that you say on a Tuesday, it's cool, you say them on Saturday, they (refs) give you a technical," Tatum said in the locker room after the win. "I don't have that s--t figured out yet, but I'll let you know when I do."
Just last week, Tatum told the 'New Heights' podcast that head coach Joe Mazzulla wanted to see a bit more aggression from the Celtics superstar, and he showed that on Monday night. Behind Al Horford's season-high 26 points, Tatum was the second-leading scorer in the win with 25 points and 14 rebounds for the team's clean sweep of their road trip, and ninth consecutive victory.
