Iowa baseball completes sweep of Ohio State with dominant run-rule win
After claiming their third Big Ten series victory with a 12-5 win vs. Ohio State (6-15, 0-6 Big Ten) on Saturday, Iowa baseball (14-8, 7-2) completed a weekend sweep of the Buckeyes with an 18-2 seven-inning run-rule thumping Sunday afternoon from Duane Banks Field.
Righty Reese Bueter (4-0, 3.52 ERA) got the start for the Hawkeyes, where he only allowed two runs on one hit and struck out seven in five innings of work to earn the win.
Relievers Ben DeTaeye and Daniel Wright each pitched perfect scoreless innings to close out the game as the run rule went into effect following the seventh frame. The two would combine for four strikeouts, giving the Hawkeyes 11 punchouts on the day.

As for the offense, Iowa finished with 15 hits, including Ben Wilmes, Gable Mitchell, Miles Risley, and Kellen Strohmeyer, each tallying three RBIs. Mitchel and Strohmeyer both hit home runs to help end the game early.
In terms of scoring, Iowa brought home three runs in the first inning, which was responded to by an Ohio State two-run second inning.
The Hawkeyes would break the game wide open in the third frame with seven runs to increase their lead to 10-2. Iowa would not stop there as they continued to pile on five runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.

“Our guys came out and starting things out like they did the first two games of the series,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Scored three runs in the first and had traffic that didn’t get in after that and Ohio State answered with the two runs on the home run. Reece Beuter gave us a good start, on a tough day to pitch with the wind and the weather. He had trouble early, but he fought through it and showed some toughness. We put some runs up in the third and then Reece put up some zeros.”
Over the three-game series against the Buckeyes, Iowa tallied 42 runs in 23 innings (1.83 runs per inning). The Hawkeyes are 9-1 over the last 10 games and are outscoring their opponents 115-30.
With the win, the Hawkeyes also move into a three-way tie for first place in the Big Ten standings with UCLA and No. 10 Oregon.
Up next for Iowa is a single-game matchup vs. Illinois State (8-13, 2-1 Missouri Valley) on Tuesday from Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Illinois. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+ (Subscription Required) and can be heard through the Hawkeyes Radio Network.
