Led by 2024 Paris Olympic Gold medalist Hubert Kos, the Texas Longhorns men's swimming and diving team has won its 16th national championship. Kos set two NCAA records and won three medals in the title meet. Texas has won a third of all men's swimming and diving national titles since 1981.
Kos, who won gold in Paris in the 200m backstroke, set the NCAA record for the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:34.21. Kos also set the the 100-yard backstroke Friday with a time of 43.20. The Hungarian also won the 200 individual medley in 1:37.91 on Thursday.
Rex Maurer also shined for Texas, winning the 500 freestyle in 4:05.35 on Thursday and the 400 individual medley on Friday at 3:34.00.
While Texas has been dominant in the pool over the past four decades, all 15 prior championships were under legendary coach Eddie Reese. Reese last won the title in 2021, but his teams struggled over the past couple of years. After Reese's retirement last year, Texas hired Arizona State coach Bob Bowman. The Sun Devils won the national championship last season.
Bowman becomes the first ever swimming and diving coach to win a men's national championship two years in a row. It has only happened in women's swimming with Richard Quick, who won with Texas in 1988 and Stanford in '89.
Texas diving coach Matt Scoggins has now won 11 NCAA titles.
Texas won six individual evens, three by Kos, and one relay. The 200 medley relay win was controversial because Florida initially won, but the Gators were later disqualified because of a false start.
