Hansi Flick’s big decision: Two Barcelona veterans await his call

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is entering a crucial period, with the imminent return of Marc-Andre ter Stegen adding a layer of complexity to his decision-making.

It must be noted that after an emotional embrace between Szczesny and Ter Stegen following Barcelona’s 4-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund, the debate over who will be Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper is intensifying.

Ter Stegen has been recovering steadily from his injury, and while he is not yet 100% fit, his progress has been encouraging.

However, Flick has been cautious about delving deeply into the subject of Ter Stegen’s return, perhaps preferring to delay the decision until his goalkeeper is fully match-ready.

Once Ter Stegen is back, it will inevitably spark a major decision for Flick: Should he reinstate the German international as the starting goalkeeper or stick with Szczesny, who has been in exceptional form?

A challenging decision for Flick

The situation is further complicated by UEFA regulations, which could force Barcelona to deregister Szczesny if Ter Stegen returns to Champions League action.

According to the rules of the competition, only one goalkeeper can be registered, which would create significant consequences for Szczesny’s involvement in the tournament.

Despite the looming uncertainty, Szczesny’s performances have been nothing short of impressive. Since arriving at Barcelona, the Polish goalkeeper has gone 21 matches without defeat—boasting 18 wins and three draws.

His performances have been a key factor in Barcelona’s successful run, and he has kept 11 clean sheets during this period

Szczesny’s growing affection for Barcelona

Szczesny has quickly become a fan favorite, with supporters already chanting his name. His stellar performances have earned him affection, making his potential departure from the starting lineup all the more difficult.

Barcelona are in negotiations to extend his contract, with plans to offer him a one-year deal with an optional extension. Szczesny is reportedly keen to stay, enjoying his time at the club and the success that has come with it.

For Flick, the decision to replace Szczesny with Ter Stegen is not as straightforward as it might seem.

The German goalkeeper is Barcelona’s captain and a figure of great importance to the team, but removing Szczesny from the starting XI now—when he is in such strong form—could prove risky.
