Girls All-Area weightlifting: Choctaw's Welch highlights area's strongest
From Garrett Bagley's dynasties at Navarre to this year's state sweep by Choctawhatchee senior Shelby Welch, the Emerald Coast has long been a hotbed for strong female weightlifters.
Let's take a look at the latest crop of All-Area selections, featuring three state champs and 12 podium efforts.
Weightlifter of the Year: Shelby Welch, Choctaw
After taking off the state meet her junior year due to attending her sister's wedding, Welch dominated the postseason in her swan song.
She owned districts with wins by 125 pounds in the traditional meet and 140 pounds in the Olympic division. She swept regionals, winning the traditional division by 40 pounds and the Olympic meet by 55 pounds. Then come the 2A state tournament, her 170-pound bench press bested her previous PR by 15 pounds and her 200-pound clean-and-jerk was a 10-pound record. She'd need every bit of it, her 370-pound total besting Eustis' Zeta Zachman by 20 pounds for the state crown. In the snatch in the Olympic division, the future Georgia Bulldog matched her best and finished with a 355-pound total, 35 pounds clear of Zachman.
All-Area Weightlifting Team (must be state medalist)
Lily Forster, Niceville, 101 pounds
Forster won the 3A traditional title with a 290-pound total and finished second in the Olympic portion with a 260-pound total, just five pounds off the state champion.
Olivia Hall, Navarre, 139 pounds
Hall finished runner-up in the traditional portion with a 360-pound total and third in the Olympic class with a 345-pound finish.
Izzy Zach, Navarre, 183 pounds
Zach swept her 183-pound 3A class, posting 380-pound totals in the traditional and Olympic portions.
Jade Jenkins, Choctaw, Unlimited
In the 2A unlimited class, Jenkins finished third in the Olympic portion and fifth in the traditional with totals of 375 and 395 pounds, respectively.
Michayla Rose, Baker, 169 pounds
Rose finished fifth in the traditional class (335 pound) and sixth in the Olympic (280) of her 1A 169-pound weight class.
