The Chronicle's 2024-25 All-Area Girls Basketball Team
Mar. 25—Their high schools are separated by less than 20 miles round trip. They've been AAU teammates. They've been the catalysts in leading their respective girls basketball teams to league and district titles plus extended runs in the state tournament.
For Julia Dalan and Karsyn Freeman, they were also the best two players in Lewis County this winter. The two put up gaudy numbers on a nightly basis and were the stars of the show every time they touched the court.
And now, they're sharing the top honor for area athletes.
Dalan and Freeman were named as co-MVPs for The Chronicle's 2024-25 all-area girls basketball team, the first time the team will have shared MVPs. It is Dalan's second straight MVP honor and Freeman's first for basketball.
The Adna star was the all-area MVP for volleyball in the fall.
"Julia is amazing," Freeman said. "She's a smart player and I'm excited to see where she goes."
While the two played in separate classifications, there has always been a mutual respect between the pair of seniors. Dalan and Freeman have played with each other through the summer circuit.
"I'm really happy I got to share it with her," Dalan said. "It is different with AAU, but her energy she brings to the court, I haven't been able to see with anybody else. She's an amazing athlete."
Dalan not only averaged a double-double at 21.2 points per game and 14.2 rebounds per game, but she etched her name in the W.F. West history book in multiple categories. She departs the program as the career leader in points, rebounds and blocks plus is top-five in various other miscellaneous categories.
The Portland recruit won the EvCo MVP three times and over the last two years, set multiple state tournament records for blocks in a game, blocks in a tournament and rebounds in a tournament.
All told, Dalan leaves Chehalis as one of the most successful players in school history.
"I had a conversation with my parents, but I was raised with the mindset that there is always someone who is going to be better at something ," Dalan said. "Someone will get it over me, but it is obviously very cool. All of them, I couldn't do without my coaches and my team."
The focus for Dalan now will be training herself to play Division I basketball for the Pilots, one of the best mid-major programs in the country. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the WBIT tournament after beating Stanford and Seton Hall in the first two rounds.
The 6-foot-4 post is ready for the next level.
"I'm very excited," she said. "I've always loved having new chances and new opportunities. I'm really looking forward to it."
Freeman spent just two years in Adna, but left a profound impact on the team with back-to-back state tournament appearances and two straight trophies. Her final game of the season was a 27-point performance in the Class 2B state title game.
She set the new state tournament mark (post-2017) for points per game at 28.5, surpassing Napavine's Maddie Lee's average of 28.3.
"The most important one is trusting each other," Freeman said. "We knew what to do and what was coming for us."
The guard finished with the winter by clipping at 25.7 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 steals and four assists a night. She'll finish her prep career with track and field in the spring where she is attempting to defend her discus state title.
As for the future, Freeman is still up in the air about what her athletic life will be like post-high school.
"I'm going to play basketball for college," she said. "Don't know where though."
The Chronicle's 2024-25 All-Area Girls Basketball Team:
Dilyn Boeck, W.F. West
In her first year in the starting lineup, the Bearcats guard broke out in a big way to snare first team all-EvCo honors by averaging 19.5 points per game. Boeck was the catalyst in various early season games by being the top scorer while also notching five rebounds and over three steals per game.
Danika Hallom, Adna
The senior guard was a steady contributor in helping the Pirates finish as the Class 2B runners-up, the highest finish in school history. Hallom was a slasher that nailed a clutch triple in critical moments, averaging 11.4 points per night while grabbing nearly five rebounds per game and swiping three steals a night.
Hayden Kaut, Napavine
The two-time all-area honoree vaulted into a leadership role for the Tigers and was the focal point in leading them to a third place finish in Class 2B. Kaut averaged 16.3 points per game, but increased her rebounds per night from 6.2 last winter to 8.8 this season. She shot 42 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line.
Emalie Jacoby, Onalaska
The sophomore was the best player for the Loggers in recording multiple 40-point games in helping them reach a winner-to-state game in the District 4 tournament. Jacoby notched averages of 19.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.8 steals and 2.8 assists per game. She was named to the all-C2BL first team.
Brooklynn Swenson, Rainier
If Swenson's impact was overlooked, it wasn't when the Mountaineers went 0-2 in the state tournament after she suffered an injury in the district title game. Still, the body of work of the senior guard was 11.5 points per game, 4.8 assists a night with shooting clips of 55 percent from the field and 37 percent from downtown.
Karli Phelps, Pe Ell
The Trojans sophomore picked up her second all league MVP in helping them win the Columbia Valley regular season title and Class 1B District 4 championship for the first time in 12 years. Phelps averaged 13.5 points per game and was over four assists, steals and rebounds per night.
