Florida baseball bounces back with run-rule win over Jacksonville
Florida baseball desperately needed a win after being swept over the weekend, and the Gators delivered a bounce-back win Tuesday night, 16-4 over seven innings, against the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins.
Every Gator scored throughout six innings of offense, including a crooked number in each of the last four. Brendan Lawson and Colby Shelton led the way with three hits apiece, and Justin Nadeau and Landon Stripling also recorded multi-hit days. Lawson drove in a team-high five runs, bringing in two with a three-run home run in the third and two more in the fourth on a double to left-center. Nadeau also hit a three-run homer, his first big fly as a Gator, as did Landon Stripling during a big six-run sixth.
The only two Florida bats to not record a hit in the run-rule victory were Bobby Boser, who struck out three times, and Cade Kurland, who left the game after showing discomfort. Kevin O'Sullivan confirmed that Kurland's shoulder did not pop back out after a few weeks on the mend from a dislocation, but he acknowledged it might have been a bit early to bring his second baseman back.
In other injury news, O'Sullivan announced that left-hander Frank Menendez is out for the year with an elbow injury. Gators Wire spoke to Menendez last week and learned of the injury. He expects to undergo Tommy John surgery. The good news is that Pierce Coppola is expected to begin throwing again next week.
The trio of Jackson Barberi (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), Christian Rodriguez (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) and Niko Janssens (2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) threw for Florida. Rodriguez earned the win as the first relief arm after Barberi went three innings in the start.
Florida moves to 17-5 on the year and 14-1 at home. The Gators host Florida A&M on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. EDT before turning the page to Georgia, which visits for a three-game series in Gainesville this weekend.
