Auburn's Johni Broome among NCAA Tournament's top south regional players

Auburn forward Johni Broome has had a season for the ages, and now it is time for the star to get a shot at winning a national championship.

Broome has been in a season-long foot race with Duke's Cooper Flagg for National Player of the Year honors, an award he could solidify with a strong March Madness showing. That is one reason why many eyes will be on Broome this NCAA Tournament.

In On3's ranking of the top 10 players competing in the NCAA Tournament South Regional, Broome takes the top spot. On3's James Fletcher III says that Broome's development into a strong two-way player will aid Auburn greatly in its tournament run.

Johni Broome has led college basketball all season, coming down to the wire in a close National Player of the Year race after leading Auburn to a No. 1 overall seed. The center has developed his game and added new skills which make him unstoppable on both ends of the floor. The focus of every gameplan, he looks to write his name in March Madness history with more two-way performances.

Broome enters the NCAA Tournament averaging 18.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game and has picked up 18 double-doubles on the season, which ranks No. 6 in the country. Louisville's Chucky Hepburn, Michigan's Danny Wolf, and Marquette's Kam Jones are several players on On3's list that Auburn could encounter this NCAA Tournament.

Broome and the Tigers will kickstart their NCAA Tournament run on Thursday against the nearby Alabama State Hornets. Tipoff is set for 1:50 p.m. CT on CBS live from Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.
