Fastest quarterback 40-yard dash times: Alabama's QB Jalen Milroe nears top five

How fast did Jalen Milroe run at Alabama's pro day? That depends on who you ask.

Milroe ran the 40-yard dash in front of scouts for the first time at his pro day on Wednesday after opting out of running the drill at the NFL combine. The times that various scouts reported for the Alabama quarterback's sprint were widely varied, but they ultimately told a similar story: Milroe is very fast for a quarterback.

Even using some of the more conservative estimates for Milroe's 40-yard dash time, the 22-year-old would rank among the fastest quarterbacks currently in the NFL.

Here's what to know about Milroe's 40-yard dash attempts Wednesday, and how they stack up against the fastest quarterback times previously recorded.

Jalen Milroe 40-yard dash time

Milroe opted out of running the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in late February, but he did participate in the drill at Alabama's pro day on Wednesday.

Scouts measured a wide variety of times for Milroe's 40-yard dash attempts. Times for his first attempt ranged from 4.50-4.52 seconds, and his second attempt had times between 4.37 and 4.45 seconds. Multiple reporters noted that Milroe drifted a bit during his runs, meaning his times could have been even better.

According to SEC Network, the aggregated "official" time for Milroe's 40-yard dash at Alabama's pro day was 4.40 seconds. That puts him among the fastest NFL quarterbacks to ever run the 40 and faster than speedy gunslingers like Robert Griffin III and Justin Fields.

SEC Network reporting that the aggregated "official" clocking on Jalen Milroe's 40-yard dash is a 4.40, which means some sub-4.4 clockings from scouts got into the mix.
Also, his 10-yard split time was a 1.44 (first 10 yards of the 40), which is absolutely ridiculous.

In Week 11 of the college football season, Milroe hit 21.9 miles per hour during an option play against LSU, according to Reel Analytics. The NFL's Next Gen Stats only recorded four ball-carriers with faster speeds during the 2024 season: kick return specialist KaVontae Turpin, wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., running back Jahmyr Gibbs and running back Saquon Barkley.

These are the fastest 40-yard dash times by quarterbacks in NFL history, according to times from the NFL combine and various pro days:

  • Michael Vick: 4.33 seconds
  • Lamar Jackson: 4.34 seconds*
  • Reggie McNeal: 4.40 seconds
  • Jalen Milroe: 4.40 seconds*
  • Robert Griffin III: 4.41 seconds
  • Anthony Richardson: 4.43 seconds
  • Justin Fields: 4.45 seconds*
  • Marcus Vick: 4.47 seconds

Note: An asterisk (*) denotes times that were recorded at those quarterbacks' pro days and not the NFL combine. Milroe and Jackson decided not to run at the NFL combine. Fields was unable to run an official time due to the cancellation of the 2021 NFL combine.
