How could Tetairoa McMillan's 40-yard dash impact the Saints chances to draft him?
The New Orleans Saints should hope for Tetairoa McMillan to fall to them at the ninth overall pick, and disputes around his 40-yard dash could impact the chances of that.
McMillan, like many other top prospects, opted to not do any of the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. That left scouts patiently waiting to see how the dominant receiver would run at his pro day. McMillan delivered a time of 4.48 seconds, per Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, but MMQB's Albert Breer reports scouts he talked to clocked the receiver between 4.54 to 4.57.
Neither time is bad, but a 4.48 would have been great for McMillan who stands 6-foot-4 and weighed in at 219 pounds. He's seen as a big-bodied wide receiver who can also work downfield. As you hope is the case with most times, his 40-yard dash is a confirmation of what was seen on tape.
It's hard to say what this does to McMillan's stock, but it should keep the wide receiver as a top-10 pick. A mid 4.5 time is what is expected for his size, but the lack of great testing speed could scare some teams that high in the draft. Small things like that spook certain teams through this process.
If McMillan is on the board when the Saints pick, New Orleans should do their best McMillan impersonation and run a 4.48 or a 4.55 to turn in the card.
