Fast start propels Wimberley past London girls soccer in regional final

The London girls soccer team could not overcome a three-goal flurry in the opening minutes of Tuesday's Class 4A Division II regional final in Floresville.

Wimberley hit the Pirates with a trio of goals in the opening 11 minutes of the match on its way to a 6-0 win to win the regional title and claim a spot in the state semifinals.

London's season came to an end at 23-5. The Texans handed the Pirates two of those losses, including a 4-0 loss early in the season.

The District 29-4A champion Pirates had never advanced beyond the regional semifinals until last week's 2-1 win against Canyon Lake, but Wimberley (23-1-2) struck fast to put London in a bind.

Ellen Watson scored in the opening minutes followed by two quick goals from Haley Lopez. London settled in after the early blitz, but trailed 4-0 at the break.

Wimberley advanced to face Region III champion El Campo in the state semifinals.

London finished the campaign as the second Coastal Bend Class 4A girls program to break through to the regional final, including Calallen in 2021 and 2022.
