No. 7 Tennessee (30-7) defeated Western Carolina (18-19), 4-0, Tuesday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Freshman Erin Nuwer (5-1) pitched a one-hit shutout against the Catamounts. Nuwer, a freshman who pitched a no-hitter in her debut for the Lady Vols in a 10-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 7, did not allow a hit over 6.2 innings. She had 12 strikeouts and pitched a complete game. Nuwer totaled 82 pitches, including 52 strikes.
Tennessee led, 2-0, in the first inning. McKenna Gibson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Laura Mealer recorded one RBI with a sacrifice fly.
In the second inning, Kinsey Fielder hit a RBI single, extending the score, 3-0.
Freshman catcher Emma Clarke hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Lady Vols. She went 1-for-2 and scored two runs and recorded one RBI.
Gibson went 1-for-2. She recorded one RBI, while Kinsley Fiedler also went 1-for-2 and had one RBI.
