College basketball analyst furious that UNC basketball made NCAA Tournament
The North Carolina Tar Heels were the biggest surprise on Selection Sunday this year, earning a No. 11 seed and a spot in the play-in game against San Diego State. As soon as UNC's name was called, which was early, the internet was surprised and freaked out wondering how the Tar Heels were in the field.
With North Carolina in as the last team selected, it meant that West Virginia, Indiana, and Boise State among others were left out. Many are even pointing to Bubba Cunningham being the sole reason why UNC was in because of him being the Athletic Director.
On Monday, the outrage continued and Jon Rothstein had some strong words for the committee and the situation while appearing on Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take" podcast:
"This is one of the biggest miscarriages of justices that I have seen in all of my years covering college basketball," Rothstein said. "When you think about right now what the criteria is to get teams in the NCAA Tournament, at the end of the day what is always going usurp everything is who did you play? Where did you play them? And did you win? North Carolina was 1-2 against Quad 1 opponents. That is just a fact of life. And then when you look at some of the teams that were left out of the bracket, the two I'm looking at specifically, West Virginia and Indiana. And remember with North Carolina's resume, Carolina also had a Quad 3 defeat on it's resume. Indiana, which was left out of the tournament in favor of North Carolina, did not have. And if looking at big wins right now, North Carolina had one against the field. it had one against UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic. . . Indiana won a road game at Michigan State in East Lansing, who is a two seed right now. . . Indiana also beat Purdue at home. I don't understand how Carolina can get in over Indiana."
Rothstein then moved to West Virginia where he explained again.
"What about West Virginia? The miscarriage of justice continues," Rothstein said. "West Virginia went to Allen Fieldhouse and beat Kansas. West Virginia beat Iowa State at home, a three-seed. And West Virginia on a natural court beat Arizona State and beat Gonzaga. This is one of the biggest miscarriages of justice that I have seen in nearly 20 years covering college basketball on the national level."
Rothstein is clearly hung up on the quad system and the lack of Quad 1 wins for the Tar Heels. He does not care about the other metrics which is in favor of North Carolina. He also doesn't mention Xavier who has a very weak resume with also.....one Quad 1 win.
