Byng, Tupelo finish 1-1 on Day 2 in Stonewall

STONEWALL — The Byng Lady Pirates and the Tupelo Lady Tigers both split a pair of games Friday at the Beast of the East Tournament.

Byng shut out Vanoss 4-0 before dropping a 4-1 decision to Davis. Tupelo edged host Stonewall 4-3 before falling to Moss 12-10.

The Lady Pirates, who entered the week at 2-5, were at the Ada Festival on Monday to battle the host Lady Cougars and Tishomingo. Byng is scheduled to host Class 4A No. 1 Dale at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and welcomes Stonewall to town at 5 p.m. Friday.

Tupelo, ranked No. 6 in Class A, entered the week at 5-2. The Lady Tigers are at Vanoss tonight and will compete in the Atoka Festival against the host Lady Wampus Cats and Calera Thursday night.

Byng 4, Vanoss 0

The game was a defensive battle and scoreless through six complete innings before Byng broke through with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Hailey Alexander ripped a clutch two-out, three-RBI triple to put Byng on top 3-0. She then scored on a base hit from Piper Presley.

The Lady Pirates collected 11 hits in the contest, led by Paige Ridgway’s 3-for-3 showing. Sophia Townsend and Mearah Adams both finished 2-for-3 and scored a run and Alexander also had two hits for the Byng team.

Addi Sheppard finished 2-for-3 to pace Vanoss at the plate. Riley King, Avery Wilson, Vaeh Pierce and Kira Miller had the other VHS hits.

Davis 4, Byng 1

Byng and Davis went blow for blow through six innings and ended up tied at 1-1. But the Lady Wolves got a one-out, three-run homer from Mattie Morton in the bottom of the seventh to steal the walk-off victory.

Byng scored a single run in the top of the first inning via a two-out, solo home run off the bat of Piper Presley but went scoreless over the final six frames. The Lady Pirates stranded eight base runners.

Presley finished 2-for-2 with a walk in Byng’s 10-hit offense. Paige Ridgway also had two hits for Byng and Kinley Sellers cracked a double in a 3-for-3 effort from the top of the Byng lineup.

Emerson Henley finished 3-for-3 with a double to pace the Lady Wolves at the plate and Morton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Kadyn Griffin also had two hits for Davis.

Tupelo 4, Stonewall 3

The Lady Tigers trailed 3-1 before scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning to surge ahead. Jaylee Tailor and Faith Christian forced in the tying and go-ahead tallies on back-to-back bases-loaded walks with two outs.

Jade Ellis led an eight-hit THS offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Lainee Wafford ripped a solo home run with two outs in the top of the first inning to get Tupelo on the scoreboard. She finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Keira Miller also had two hits and knocked in a run for Tupelo.

Landree Dye had two of six Stonewall hits in the game and scored a run. Rez Anderson also had two hits for the Lady Longhorns and standout Lilly Wyche walked three times — twice intentionally — and scored two runs.

Aiyana Valdez drove in a run for the home team.

Moss 12, Tupelo 10

The Lady Tigers held a 10-6 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but Moss scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to get within 10-8.

Moss — ranked No. 5 in Class B — used three Tupelo errors to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to surge ahead.

The Lady Tigers out-hit Moss 19-13. Marley Crites led the way, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Lainee Wafford finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for Tupelo and Keira Miller went 3-for-3 and also knocked in two runs.

Elexis Stafford paced Moss at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Gracelyn Wulf went 1-for-4 with a double and three runs scored and Harlee Nolen hit a double, drove in two runs and scored ...
