The injury-riddled Milwaukee Brewers continue to kick the tires on the pitching market, even into the start of the regular season.
The Brewers are set to watch a free-agent pitcher throw a bullpen for members of their scouting staff, principal owner Mark Attanasio indicated Wednesday afternoon. Attanasio did not mention a name of the pitcher, but did drop another hint while speaking at Carroll University: It was a client of mega-agent Scott Boras.
“Scott Boras, who’s a well-known agent who I was talking to yesterday because Scott might’ve noticed that we need some pitching,” Attanasio said while discussing a separate topic. “And he had a player, one of his that he thought we should sign, who’s going to throw a bullpen for us.”

That player?
Boras has a handful of established big-league pitchers still on the market, including reliever Joe Kelly and former slugger-turned-pitcher Joey Gallo, who announced at the end of spring training that he was converting to pitching after hitting 208 homers in his career.
But perhaps the most logical answer is Spencer Turnbull, a right-hander who spent last season with the Philadelphia Phillies and remains unsigned into April.
In 54 ⅓ innings last season, Turnbull had a 2.65 ERA and struck out 58 batters to 20 walks. The 32-year-old made seven starts and 17 appearances in total. Turnbull suffered a season-ending lat strain in June with Philadelphia.
There’s no indication yet that the Brewers are moving toward a deal with Turnbull – or any other Boras client, but it’s clear they continue to monitor the market for external help given the depleted state of their pitching.
Aaron Civale went on the injured list with a hamstring strain earlier this week, joining starters Aaron Ashby, Robert Gasser, DL Hall, Tobias Myers and Brandon Woodruff on the injured list. José Quintana isn’t hurt but also hasn’t pitched for the Brewers yet after signing a few weeks into spring training and is set to make his Brewers debut April 11.
There's also the impending brief departure of Nestor Cortes, whose wife is due to deliver their first child in the next two weeks, which could leave the Brewers needing another fill-in arm at the very least.
