No. 2 Calera holds off Latta

CALERA — Latta limited Calera to just two hits but the Panthers couldn’t generate enough offense in a 2-1 road loss to the Bulldogs Tuesday night.

Coach Dillon Atkinson’s club, No. 4 in Class 2A-1, fell to 11-5 while No. 2 Calera improved to 12-1. The Panthers travel to Wister — ranked No. 3 in Class A-1 — at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Calera 2, Latta 1

After Latta left the bases loaded with one out in the top of the first inning, Calera pushed across two runs in the bottom half.

Logan Bumgarner walked to lead off the bottom of the first, went to second on an error and scurried down to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Zaiden Craige, Bumgarner scored on a sacrifice fly from Jaron Varner to put Calera on top 1-0.

Craige later scored when Talon Rose hit a ground ball to shortstop to put the home team ahead 2-0.

Latta put together a two-out rally in the top of the third inning. Darien Miller was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by Reese Littlefield that trimmed the CHS advantage to 2-1. Littlefield was left standing on third.

The Panthers got runners at first and second with one out in the top of the fifth inning after base hits by Kaiden Goolsby and Landon Fortner but again left a runner at third base.

Varner reached on an error and later scored on a sac fly by Darren Johnson for a Calera insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
