Breaking down Nebraska's first-round NCAA Tournament opponent, the Louisville Cardinals
The Nebraska women's basketball team will make their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the past four seasons when they face the Louisville Cardinals later this week. The first-round game will be played on Friday, Mar. 21, in Fort Worth, Texas.
This will be Nebraska's 17th NCAA Tournament bid overall. The Huskers hold an all-time record of 9-16. As Nebraska's head coach, Amy Williams has a 1-3 tournament record.
The furthest the program has reached in the tournament is the Sweet Sixteen, which they have done twice in team history (2010, 2013). Last season, the Huskers made the second round, defeating the Texas A&M Aggies in the first round before falling to the Oregon State Beavers.
All-Big Ten center Alexis Markowski leads the 2024-25 Huskers. Markowski averages 16.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She's joined by freshman Britt Prince, who averages 13.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She stepped up in the Big Ten Tournament, improving her averages to 17.0 points and 5.3 assists per game over three tournament games.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN. Scroll down to find a breakdown of the Huskers' tournament opponent, the Louisville Cardinals.
Record
The Cardinals enter Friday's game with a 21-10 overall record and a 13-5 in the ACC. They lost to the Duke Blue Devils in the second round of the ACC Tournament. They enter the NCAA Tournament having lost three of their last five games, but all three losses were to Top-Ten teams.
Head Coach
Head coach Jeff Walz leads the Cardinals. Walz has been in charge of the Louisville program since the 2007 season. He holds an overall record of 485-145. He's also made four Final Fours, with the most recent appearance coming in 2022. He also has four ACC regular season titles and one ACC tournament title. Walz also has Nebraska connections. He was an assistant in Lincoln from 1997 to 2001 and even coached Nebraska head coach Amy Williams in 1997 when she was a senior with the Huskers.
Leading Scorer
Guard Jayda Curry leads the Cardinals. Curry is a first-team All-ACC member, averages a team-best 13.4 points per game, and is second in assists with 3.1 per game. She missed both of Louisville's ACC Tournament games with a shoulder injury. She's joined in the backcourt by freshman guard Tajianna Roberts, who averages 13.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Senior forward Olivia Cochran is the only other Cardinal who averages double digits at 10.1 points per game.
Series History
This will be the fifth meeting all-time between these two schools, with the Cardinals holding a 3-1 series record. The most recent meeting was in Louisville for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Nov. 29, 2018, an 85-68 Louisville victory. The two teams share only two common opponents for the 2024-25 season. Louisville opened the season with a 66-59 loss to Big Ten Tournament champion UCLA Bruins in Paris, France, on Nov. 4. The Huskers played UCLA twice and lost both meetings. Georgia Tech was the only other common opponent between the Cardinals and Huskers this season. Louisville defeated the Yellow Jackets 69-60 in Louisville, while Nebraska lost to Georgia Tech 72-61 in Atlanta.
