Baylor Scheierman's career night lifts shorthanded Celtics past the Nets 104-96 at home
The Boston Celtics grabbed their 50th win of the season Tuesday night with a 104-96 home win against the Brooklyn Nets. This marks the second time in as many games Boston has defeated Brooklyn.
The Celtics were without both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, both of whom sat with a knee injury. Derrick White and Kristaps Porzingis stepped in to fill the scoring load, combining for 43 points. But it was rookie Baylor Scheierman who stole the show. The Creighton product had a career-high 20 points off the bench, providing a key spark on a night where Boston struggled to pull ahead until the final moments of the fourth quarter.
Let's jump in and recap the action from the TD Garden Tuesday night, a 104-96 home victory.
First quarter
Porzingis did the bulk of the scoring for the Celtics to open the game. Boston fed the big man down low, taking advantage of Brooklyn's relative lack of size.
Beyond that, though, the Celtics offense looked flat. This is a little unsurprising given Tatum and Brown's absence, but was a problem for the home team nonetheless. That was until Scheierman checked in.
The rookie shot 7-for-8 from the field with 5 made 3-pointers for the game, playing 16 minutes overall. His 20 points are the most scored by a Celtics rookie since Payton Pritchard scored 28 in April of 2021.
Second quarter
The Celtics continued to look good working the ball inside, but this represented a small portion of their shot diet. In total, 24 of Boston's 39 field goal attempts in the first half were 3-pointers.
And on the other side of the action, Boston's defense continued to struggle, especially when the Nets put pressure on the rim. For the game Brooklyn had
The Celtics managed just 44 points at the half. This is tied for the second lowest first half scoring total for Boston all season.
Third quarter
White came alive here in the third, as did the entire Celtics offense. He exploded for 13 points in the frame, helping give Boston a bit of scoring mojo.
But the problems defending the rim persisted, made worse by Boston's inability to control the ball. The Celtics logged 13 turnovers for the game
Once again Scheierman played a deciding role in giving the Celts a bit of a lift. He authored a heroic 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Boston a slim lead with the fourth quarter on deck.
Fourth quarter
Unforced errors remained an issue for the Celtics in the final frame of the game. Boston's rim defense continued to struggle, too. As a result, the Nets never fully went away. All told, the game saw 13 lead changes and 9 ties.
With only a few minutes remaining, Boston tightened up on defense. Suddenly the Nets scoring was labored and inconsistent. This was enough for the Celtics to build a lead down the stretch and pull ahead.
Boston is now 50-19 on the year. The Celtics now embarks on a six-game road trip out west, the longest of the season.
