Nets' Jordi Fernandez happy with team's performance in loss at Celtics
The Brooklyn Nets looked like they had turned things around this past weekend with a narrow loss to the Boston Celtics and an impressive win over the Atlanta Hawks. However, Brooklyn had a chance to continue their winning streak Tuesday heading into Boston with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown out of the lineup, but the Nets did not close out the game well enough to win.
"I think that you know, we were taking good shots. We only had nine turnovers for 10 points. Their switch-ability. I think it bothered us," Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said following Tuesday's 104-96 loss at the Celtics. Brooklyn looked like they were heading towards a win after heading into halftime with a 49-44 lead, but the second half saw Brooklyn fall behind 60-47 due to some unexpected performances from Boston's supporting players.
"We're in a good place, but (Baylor) Scheierman made five threes in the second half. That was the big difference," Fernandez continued, mentioning Scheierman's production as he erupted for 20 points in the game, including 17 points in the second half. "I think that we took good shots, 45 threes, they just didn't go in and they shot 44% from the field, 33% from three."
The first half saw the Nets shoot 44.2% from the field and 31.8% from three-point land while accumulating 14 assists to only two turnovers while the Celtics shot 35.9% from the floor and 25.0% from deep on just eight assists and six turnovers. However, the game flipped on its head in the second half due to the performance of Scheierman and Derrick White, who had 15 points of his own in the final 24 minutes.
Looking further into the team stats, Brooklyn started to run more isolation without as many players touching the ball as they posted just seven assists on 17 made field-goals, supporting Fernandez's point about Boston's ability to switch disrupting a Nets offense without many players that can take advantage of switching defenses. Brooklyn comes away from the game with a disappointing loss that is another contest that got away from them as this season comes to an end.
