Assane Diop enters NCAA transfer portal, marking the third departure of the offseason

Colorado basketball lost another player to the transfer portal Thursday evening when forward Assane Diop announced he was leaving the program.

Diop was perhaps the most likely player to enter the portal when the season ended. However, after Javon Ruffin, Harrison Carrington and Courtney Anderson opted to leave, it seemed possible that Diop would stay in Boulder.

The 6-foot-8 sophomore played 35 games, averaging 3.8 points in 15.2 minutes per game. Diop sometimes seemed overmatched in the Big 12, but he would be a rising star at a mid-major program.

Diop, a Senagal native, played in 67 games in his two seasons at Colorado, including starting 17 games this past season. The former four-star recruit will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Head coach Tad Boyle said he did not expect any more departures after the three players named above, but now he will have four scholarships to fill heading into next season.

The portal closes in three weeks, so after weeks of silence, the Colorado offseason became much more interesting, and Boyle and company will have to get down to business to fill the roster slots.
