2 bodies found in landing gear of JetBlue flight at Fort Lauderdale airport

Florida law enforcement officials launched an investigation after two bodies were found late Monday in the landing gear area of a JetBlue aircraft at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

“Around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, Broward Sheriff’s Office Airport District deputies responded to a call regarding two individuals found in the landing gear area of a JetBlue aircraft at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport,” Carey Codd, public information officer for Broward Sheriff's Office, said in a statement obtained by NewsNation.

“Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue also responded. On scene, paramedics pronounced both individuals deceased," Codd added.

The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office is now working to perform autopsies to determine the causes of death of both individuals.

The names of the victims have not been publicly released.

The incident comes about two weeks after a body was found in a wheel well of a United Airlines flight to Maui, Hawaii, last month.

Airlines have been encouraged to improve their process to ensure passengers without a ticket aren’t hiding on the plane before takeoff.

JetBlue has been under scrutiny in recent months for chronic flight delays — and is discontinuing service to several cities following the collapse of its attempted merger with Spirit Airlines.
