Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - How To Sneak And Steal From People
The nights are dark and full of terrors in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. After all, we're talking about 15-century Bohemia here, and neither Edison nor Tesla is around. Of course, nighttime provides a lot of opportunities, especially for someone who looks poses like a rich and respectable individual in public, but is actually a corrupt criminal in reality. Perhaps Henry of Skalitz is aiming to be a politician one day. We digress. Anyway, here's our guide on how to sneak and steal in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
How to sneak and steal in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Stealth and Thievery guide
Stealth and Thievery in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 go hand in hand. The former helps you stay undetected as you move around villages and the wilderness, while the latter aids you as you rob people for all they're worth. Our guide discusses several facets that affect these stats, as well as tips related to gameplay mechanics.
Noise, conspicuousness, and visibility
To sneak in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, you just need to press the "C" key on your keyboard or the right thumbstick on a gamepad. Here's the thing though: Noise is a key factor whenever you try to stealthily roam around settlements and buildings. If you're wearing heavy armor or you're over-encumbered, people will hear you as you're walking about.
Ideally, you should make use of the game's outfit presets. The first one should be your default set for combat, while the second could be for your civilian attire, essentially what you want to wear if you're up to no good.
Conspicuousness and visibility also factor in to a lesser extent. Conspicuousness is derived from noticeable gear pieces, such as high-quality armors or fine robes. Visibility, meanwhile, is affected by wearing bright clothing. In short: If you want to stay in the shadows, you need to look like a bland and unrecognizable fella.
Nighttime shenanigans and enemy awareness
Ideally, you should go on your stealing spree at night once most townsfolk are asleep--i.e. around 10:00 p.m. However, when you're walking along village streets, you should still bring out your torch. Guards that see you without one will become highly suspicious. Even if you aren't caught by an NPC when committing a theft, you'll become the number one suspect just because a guard saw you skulking about at night without a torch.
Additionally, you should pay attention to enemy awareness when in restricted areas. This is denoted by the hare icon at the top of your screen. The hare's ears will start rising to the top, denoting that someone has seen you. However, if you can stay hidden, that person will lose interest and won't pursue you anymore.
Pickpocketing minigame: Part 1 - The initial timer
To make successful use of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 pickpocket system, you should walk to NPCs and hold the button for the "Rob" action. A circular icon will appear on your screen, and the numerical value represents the timer--i.e. how many seconds you'll have for the next phase.
This icon will slowly turn red, which implies that the NPC is slowly becoming aware of your presence. We recommend just staying in the "dark red" zone, which isn't as risky as waiting for the symbol to turn "bright red."
Pickpocketing minigame: Part 2 - The loot wheel
The next phase of the pickpocketing system begins once you let go of the "Rob" button. This shows you the loot wheel:
- The door icon at the top represents the exit. You must click on this symbol to exit this panel safely before the timer expires. Failure to do so will cause the NPC to wake up.
- Various circles have hidden items that you can reveal. Selecting these will impact your remaining time.
- The golden outline around the wheel is the timer itself--i.e. how many seconds you obtained from the first phase.
The most important items that you want to reveal are keys. Once you acquire an NPC's keys, it's highly likely that they can be used to open a nearby chest with loot.
Selling stolen items and getting caught
Let's say you managed to steal a lot of items in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. You can go ahead and sell these to merchant shops once they're open during the day. However, merchants automatically lower their prices if they notice that you're selling stolen wares.
There might also be instances when you get caught. It happens. Thankfully, you can use dialogue skill checks to avoid complications. For example, you can threaten an NPC with violence or you could berate a guard. If you fail these skill checks, you have three remaining options:
- Pay the fine - The amount of money you need to pay depends on the severity of the crime.
- Accept your punishment - This depends on the severity of the offense--i.e. a light offense means you'll just go to the pillory.
- Resist arrest - You'll have to fight the guards or escape from them.
Note that your reputation will take a hit because people caught you committing a crime. Also, if you try to run away, you're not going to get very far because guards will continue to chase you. Riding a horse mount is a viable option, but your horse could bolt if they have a low Courage stat since you're surrounded by enemies. Of course, you can stand your ground and fight, but killing guards, the wardens of peace appointed by the king or the nobility, is an even graver offense.
Stealth takedowns and stealth kills
Our Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Stealth and Thievery guide wouldn't be complete if we didn't mention silent takedowns and assassinations. These can be done once you have a Dagger equipped in its special slot.
Next, approach an enemy from behind without getting detected. A button prompt should then appear:
- Pressing the key/button causes Henry to perform a takedown (i.e. non-lethal incapacitation).
- Holding the key/button makes Henry perform a vicious stealth kill.
Beware because enemies can still counter your move. When you see a blue sword icon, you have to press the attack button. This is sometimes followed by a green shield icon, which requires you to press the block button. Failure to do these may cause your target to block your maneuver. They'll immediately shout and alert multiple hostiles within the vicinity.
Which perks affect Stealth and Thievery
The Stealth and Thievery stats, as well as other attributes, have several notable perks:
- Agility: Creeping Phantom I and II - +15/35% faster movement speed when sneaking.
- Stealth: Fleeting Shadow - When you're wanted for a crime (getting briefly spotted while trespassing also counts), you gain +3 Stealth, +2 Agility, and +2 Vitality; lasts 120 seconds.
- Stealth: Rodent - You make 25% less noise when sneaking indoors, and opening doors isn't as loud.
- Survival: Leshy I and II - +15/25% stamina recovery; +1/2 Strength, Agility, and Vitality; +2/4 Stealth.
- Thievery: Nimble Fingers - Gain time 10% faster during the first phase of the pickpocketing minigame.
- Thievery: Rapid Flight - Failure to exit the doorway during the second phase of the pickpocketing minigame won't alert the target automatically; has a three-minute cooldown.
- Thievery: Thief's Eyes - Tags appear next to stolen items, telling you where you obtained them. Grey tags--i.e. items stolen from other areas--can be sold readily to vendors.
That does it for our guide on how Thievery and Stealth work in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. While we're on the same subject, you might as well check our lockpicking guide.
