Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - How To Get A Horse Mount
Exploring the vast world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 can take a while. Fortunately, you don't have to do everything on foot, since you'd be able to find a mount to help you on your travels. Here's our guide on how to get a horse in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
How to get a horse in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
There are several ways to get horses in Kingdom Come 2: Deliverance. You can either steal or buy them, or you can progress further into the campaign until you obtain a mount for free. Our guide discusses all of these methods so you can have a fine thoroughbred.
How to steal a horse
While roaming around villages and the countryside, you might stumble upon stables that have a horse or two. These mares can be stolen just by riding on them. Naturally, this is considered a crime, so make sure you don't get spotted by townsfolk and guards. However, if you're fast enough, you can just gallop past them to safety.
Here's the kicker: Stolen horses may disappear due to a variety of reasons. For instance, we were riding a stolen horse while tackling a mission. After a cutscene played, the horse was nowhere to be found.
On the bright side, you can sell the horses that you've stolen to a merchant in the Nomads Camp, which is further east of Troskowitz. The NPC is also in the same area where you can do the Combat Trainer I and II side quests.
Where to buy a horse and how to check a mount's stats
Stables have NPCs known as grooms, and they're able to sell horses for a hefty price. Before you take your pick, though, we recommend inspecting the available horses to see their stats:
- Stamina: How long they can gallop.
- Capacity: Also known as carry weight.
- Speed: The mount's top speed.
- Courage: How likely you'll get thrown off if the horse panics or bolts away in case there are enemies.
- Value: The values of any horse that you own and one that you plan on buying will be compared. You only pay the difference between the two prices.
Pebbles: How to get a free horse mount
Henry can get reunited with his dependable mare, Pebbles, as you continue with the Wedding Crashers main quest. You could either help the blacksmith or the miller to gain an invite to the wedding at the village of Semine. Once there, you should get a side quest called The Jaunt.
When you talk to the groom at the stables, Henry will realize that the horse that's being sold is none other than Pebbles. Choose the following replies:
- "I rode in on her from Rattay."
- Presence: "Take a good look at me."
With a bit of luck, you should be able to convince the groom that Pebbles is indeed yours and you won't need to pay anything.
Should you replace Pebbles with Herring?
You can get yet another free horse in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 just after a main quest called For Whom the Bell Tolls. Lord von Bergow will thank Henry and Hans for their report, subsequently telling you to visit Trosky Castle's stables. The groom will then ask if you want to replace Pebbles with a different mount named Herring.
To be clear, Herring has slightly better stats compared to Pebbles, though if you've grown attached to Henry's old mare, then you could choose to keep her. Doing so causes the groom to offer you a deal: He can sell Herring to another buyer and you'll get some extra gold in return.
Horse mount movement and stamina
Henry will be able to mount up on a horse as long as he's not overencumbered. That's why it's often a good idea to make sure that you're not carrying a lot of stuff around, or that you're able to move items to your horse's inventory.
As for mounted controls, you'll notice that there are two gauges to the left of your health bar while you're mounted:
- The thicker green bar represents the horse's stamina. This is gradually depleted while the horse is galloping at top speed.
- The thinner yellow bar below it represents the horse's resolve. This is how often you could spur it on to gallop--i.e. kind of like a speed boost. If you keep using this, the meter will gradually fill up. Once it's full, the horse might ignore your command or it could buck you off completely.
As such, it's better to let the horse move at a trot, not as fast as galloping but it will help restore its stamina. Of course, you could also tell your horse to follow paths along the road. This is a pretty nifty way to enjoy the marvelous scenery as you go from one destination to the next.
