What will Dawn Staley wear for Women's March Madness opener? Her players have thoughts
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley, known for her streetwear style on the court, said she hadn’t yet picked out her outfit for Friday’s first-round Women's March Madness game against Tennessee Tech.
Hearing that, South Carolina guard Bree Hall said to Staley, “Send me a pic of the fit, let me see.”
Senior Sania Feagin also quickly jumped in to offer help. Staley pointed out that she styles herself for games.
“I styled you like two weeks ago. You forgot,” Hall said.
“Short memory,” Staley said with a smile.
Staley is entering her 18th NCAA Tournament, 13th consecutive with South Carolina. Through the years, she’s rocked designer brands, including Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Gucci. She’s also worn the Togethxr brand, a company famous for its “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports” merchandise, founded by former WNBA star Sue Bird, Alex Morgan, Chloe Kim and Simone Manuel.
Staley said she dresses in outfits geared toward comfort and is grateful to no longer wear high heels. She attended the Milan Fashion Week Gucci show in May, alongside other star athletes such as Venus and Serena Williams and Stefon Diggs.
“Last summer was probably the first time that I was a part of fashion shows. I would see them on social media, like, 'OK, that’s cool.' But when you’re there and you see the energy and you feel the energy, I mean, I enjoyed it,” Staley said.
Other players weighed in on Staley’s fashion decisions, also wanting to contribute to the styling process.
“She’s got her own thing going on,” freshman guard Maddy McDaniel said. “She should let me (help pick out her outfits), so I can get in her closet and take a few things.”
