Two girls powerlifters from the Texas Panhandle win state championships in Edinburg
Two powerlifters from the Texas Panhandle took home gold medals at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association state meet last week, finishing off a successful 2025 campaign.
The THSWPA's championship event featured hundreds of lifters from across the state, all convening in Edinburg from March 12-15 for the final meet of the season. Panhandle's Tana Smith and Dumas' Hannah Hernandez secured state titles in Hidalgo County, competing in different weight classes and divisions.
Smith won the 181-pound weight class in the 1A/2A division, edging out Tahoka's Madelynn De Leon by 30 pounds. The Pantherettes' standout finished with a total of 1,030 pounds, notching a 420-pound squat, a 190-pound bench press and a 420-pound deadlift.
De Leon managed to lift 225 pounds on the bench press, but couldn't get up as much weight as Smith in the other two categories.
After setting regional records in the state-qualifying meet, Hernandez finished off her senior season with a state championship in the 105-pound weight class of the 4A Division I classification. The Demonettes' star registered an 880-pound total, recording a 360-pound squat, a 195-pound bench press and a 325-pound deadlift.
Hernandez beat the second-place finisher's total by 100 pounds, earning "Best Deadlift" and "Best Lifter" awards in the light platform category.
Unlike most other sports on high school campuses in Texas, powerlifting is not sanctioned by the UIL, and is instead governed by the THSWPA and the Texas High School Powerlifting Association. The THSPA's boys state championship event will take place later this week in Abilene with a number of lifters from the Texas Panhandle set to compete.
