San Diego, Robstown, Alice, Beeville girls capture state powerlifting titles

San Diego and Robstown established themselves as a powerlifting dynasty after the Lady Pickers and Lady Vaqueros captured their fourth-consecutive state championship at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association state meet this past weekend in Edinburg.

Alice and Beeville also won state championships with the Trojans securing their second-consecutive team title. The London girls placed second overall after finishing with a team score of 21.

San Diego finished with 27 points to win the team title behind a top finish from Jalynn Garcia, who lifted 1,205 pounds in the 181-pound weight class.

San Diego's Liza-Belle Garcia (97), Taylor Ortiz (105); Addisyn Gallegos (165) and Mya Porter (242) all finished in the top three for the Lady Vaqueros.

The Lady Pickers won the Class 4A school title with 22 points behind a first-place performance from Leaya Alaniz (123). Jlynn Fernandez (105) and Jaley Larivey (165) each medaled for Robstown.

For Alice, Brooke Castillo (97) won gold with 540 pounds, followed by Diedra Chapa, who lifted 520 in the same weight class. Payson Trejo (114) finished third with 595 pounds as the Coyotes edged Temple with 15 points.

Beeville's Felicity Dominguez won first place in the 97-pound weight class after lifting 665 pounds. Bianca Carrizales (114), Eldonnette Chancellor (165) and Abigail Martinez (220) also won gold medals for the Trojans, who totaled 47 points. Emily Olivares (114) and Kelly San Miguel (132) placed second for Beeville.

Other gold-medal finishes were Orange Grove's Briana Pena (114), Santa Gertrudis Academy's Sophia Valenzuela (198), London's Addy Perez (220), Odem's Breanna Palmer (165) and Hebbronville duo Alexandra Gomez (97) and Avri Darley (105).
