Cheboygan’s Troy Wichlacz earns 15th-place finish at varsity powerlifting state finals
LAKE ORION – The Cheboygan High School powerlifting team’s season recently ended on the biggest stage possible – the state finals.
Representing the Chiefs was Troy Wichlacz, who finished 15th overall in the varsity 275-pound weight class in Lake Orion on Saturday, March 8. Wichlacz lifted a total of 1,115 pounds, a personal best. He also recorded 475 pounds on the deadlift, also a personal best.
“He did really well,” Cheboygan coach Adam Blaskowski said of Wichlacz. “He wanted to medal, which was a top 10 finish, but he still had a good day. He’s excited for next season."

Wichlacz participating at states wrapped up a solid season for the Cheboygan lifters, a group of eight athletes who either competed on varsity or junior varsity.
On the varsity level, Wichlacz was Cheboygan’s lone state qualifier, and between all athletes, five brought home medals at events. At the Farwell meet, the Chiefs placed second and earned a plaque.
Junior varsity-wise, all four participants qualified for the state finals, including Nolan Schley, who medaled at Flint Powers Catholic High School. Bailey Blaskowski, the first girl who’s competed for Cheboygan at events, also qualified for states in her division. The JV athletes recorded seven total medals.
Members of the varsity powerlifting team were Troy Wichlacz, DJ Wichlacz, Josiah Calhoon and Zach Rupp. The JV team consisted of Nolan Schley, Bailey Blaskowski, Wyatt Calhoon and Christian Uselman.
“Having more kids, it makes the competitions more fun,” Blaskowski said. “You have friends who are competing, and you can challenge in team competitions. We’re hoping to have more kids come out and we’ll be able to build more of a team atmosphere next season.”
