Three McAlester coaches earn OCA Coach of the Year honors

Three McAlester High School coaches were voted Oklahoma Coaches Association Region 6 Coach of the Year by coaches from 15 other counties at a meeting Wednesday.

Wrestling coach Billy Kydel led the Buffaloes to an undefeated season that saw wins over five ranked opponents. McAlester qualified for the OSSAA dual state meet for the first time since 1990.

Seniors Kam Hutchinson and Kenneth Carter were selected to the All-State Large East team and sophomore Emery Turner became the first Lady Buffalo regional champion in school history, finishing on top of the 190-pound division.

Golf coach Justin Bond has had his boys team place in the top five of every tournament this season, finishing second in the Coweta Invitational on Monday. Junior Seth Gilliam placed in the top three in every tournament and won both the Coweta and Skiatook tournaments.

Tennis coach Chris Burns' boys team won the Tulsa Edison Tournament on March 27.
