Texas basketball: Former Arizona forward Breya Cunningham commits to joining Longhorns

On Saturday, Breya Cunningham announced on Instagram that she will continue her career with the Texas women's basketball team.

A 6-foot-4 forward, Cunningham spent the past two seasons at Arizona. Over 32 games last season, Cunningham led the Wildcats in rebounding (225) and blocks (56) while scoring 11 points per game. Her 56.0 field goal percentage would have ranked fifth in the Big 12 had she hit the qualifying average of five field goals per game.

Arizona forward Breya Cunningham (25) talks to media during the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Media Day at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Oct. 22, 2024. Cunningham will transfer to Texas.

During the 2023 recruiting cycle, Cunningham was rated by ESPN HoopGurlz as the No. 14 recruit in the nation. Current Texas star Madison Booker was ranked 12th in the Class of 2023.

Cunningham fills an immediate need at Texas. With the graduation of Taylor Jones and Abbie Boutilier's transfer, UT lost two of its three tallest players this offseason. Last season, Texas coach Vic Schaefer often referred to the 6-4 Jones and 6-6 center Kyla Oldacre as his "two-headed monster" in the paint, and the arrival of Cunningham should help Texas replicate that on-court dynamic.

Texas went 35-4 this past season and reached the Final Four for the first time since 2003. Led by Booker and veteran point guard Rori Harmon, UT is set to retain much of its talent next winter. Cunningham is the first transfer that Texas has added to its roster this offseason.
