Texas A&M basketball down to 1 scholarship player after Buzz Williams' departure

And then there was one.

Texas A&M men's basketball has a single scholarship player on its roster thanks to a string of Aggies entering the transfer portal. The veteran-laden Aggies were already set to lose eight players to graduation, but that was before they lost their head coach.

Buzz Williams' decision this week to take the Maryland head coaching job led to at least four players transferring. The latest is reportedly freshman George Turkson Jr. Turkson, a three-star recruit coming out of high school in Massachusetts, didn't appear in any games for the Aggies last season.

Chris McDermott, a freshman forward who played just four minutes against SEC opponents this season, is the lone men's basketball player on scholarship.

Many of the transfers played sparingly, but Solomon Washington and Pharrel Payne were fixtures in the lineup for a team that won 23 games, including an NCAA Tournament matchup again Yale. They've reportedly entered into the portal.

Texas A&M has a three-person recruiting class signed for 2025. Jeremiah Green is a four-star guard, according to 247 Sports, while Aaron Glass is a three-star guard and Jasir Rencher is a three-wing forward.
