Texas A&M Athletic Director Trev Alberts made his second significant hire during his second year at the University. The current Samford head basketball coach, Bucky McMillan, will leave Alabama after five seasons to take over the Texas A&M basketball program after Buzz Wiliams departed for Maryland earlier this week.
At the young age of 41, McMillan is a coach on the rise who has built one of the more respectable teams in the Big South and is ready to take on the biggest challenge of his career, which starts with rebuilding a Texas A&M roster that is completely depleted after every remaining player except for sophomore forward Chris Mcdermott entered the transfer portal.
On Friday night, ESPN insiders Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello reported that Texas A&M is finalizing a five-year deal with McMillan, the rumored favorite at the start of the day. This hire isn't surprising for Alberts, given his favoritism toward younger candidates after hiring current Texas A&M baseball coach Michael Earley.
On paper, this is the hire Aggie fans were looking for from an offensive perspective, as McMillan's high-tempo offensive scheme, known as "bucky ball," should translate well with the better talent given Texas A&M's enhanced resources, starting with landing as many veterans as possible from the transfer portal. McMillan accumulated four consecutive 20-win seasons and a 99-52 overall record with the Bulldogs.
