Texas A&M basketball: Bucky McMillan hired as Aggies' new head coach, per report

Despite an original swing and a miss to lure Chris Beard away from ole Miss, Texas A&M basketball has found the next head coach to lead the program.

Just days after Buzz Williams' departure to Maryland, the Aggies have reportedly agreed to hire Bucky McMillan as their next men's basketball head coach.

Pete Thamel of ESPN was the first to report the hiring.

McMillan leaves Samford University and will aim to lead A&M to its fourth straight NCAA Tournament — while replacing eight graduating seniors. A&M also lost forward Pharrel Payne to the transfer portal.

McMillian, 41, is heading to College Station after leading the Bulldogs for five seasons and amassing a record of 99-52 while being named the SoCon Coach of the Year three seasons in a row. Samford was the regular season champion twice and had one NCAA Tournament bid during McMillan's tenure.

The 2023-24 season was the best in program history as Samford set a school record with 29 wins and posted a 29-6 final record, marking the third-straight season of winning at least 20 games under McMillan.
