Stonewall splits with pair of traditional Class B powers
EL RENO — Freshman Jonah Bailey hit a clutch two-RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to help the Stonewall Longhorns knock off Leedey 3-2 Friday in their final game of the Union City Spring Break Festiva.
In an earlier game on Friday, Calumet held off a late Stonewall comeback and clipped the Longhorns 10-7.
The two games were played at El Reno High School.
The split left the Longhorns — ranked No. 8 in Class A-2 — at 8-4. Calumet — ranked No. 2 in Class B — improved to 2-1 and Class B No. 5 Leedey dropped to 3-4.
Stonewall will compete in the Sulphur Bulldog Festival Thursday and Friday. The Longhorns will battle Kingston at 11 a.m. in Kingston Thursday and then tangle with Whiteboro, Texas, at 10 a.m. Friday in Sulphur.
Stonewall 3, Leedey 2
Stonewall trailed 2-1 heading into the fifth inning when Balin Morrison got things started for the Longhorns with a leadoff walk. Jarrett Wyche followed with a base hit to left field and both runners advanced when Mika Matt grounded out.
Bailey then cracked his double to left field and both runners scored to put Stonewall ahead 3-2.
Leedey got a base hit from Kysen Adams to lead off the bottom of the fifth and he stole second and raced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cooper Jones. But SHS reliever Taegus Pogue struck out Janne Thoroee and coaxed a groundout by Max Branson to end the game.
Hits were at a premium in the contest Stonewall finished with just three and Leedey managed only two.
Mika Matt was the winning pitcher for the Longhorns. He struck out two, walked two and allowed just one earned run through the first four innings. Pogue earned the save with his scoreless inning of relief.
Keaten Adams pitched all five innings for the Bison. He struck out two and walked five in a complete-game outing.
Calumet 10, Stonewall 7
After Stonewall pushed across a run in the top of the first inning, the Chieftains answered by scoring all 10 of their runs in the bottom of the first frame. That outburst was highlighted by a grand slam from Kaleb Thiessen, a two-run double by Kingston Arnold and an RBI double by Carson Cooper.
However, Stonewall relief pitcher Jonah Bailey pitched three scoreless innings to allow his team a chance to rally.
Taegus Pogue capped a five-run SHS surge in the top of the fourth with a three-RBI double. Brian Morrison knocked in a run with an RBI single during the frame that saw Stonewall trim its deficit to 10-6.
In the top of the fifth and final inning, Landon Gutierrez was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and scored on a Calumet error. However, that’s where the comeback ended.
Stonewall collected four hits in the game. Mika Matt went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, Morrison finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Jarrett Wyche ended up 1-for-2 and scored once.
Talon Arnold was the only Chieftain with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Cooper was the winning pitcher for Calumet. He struck out three, walked four and allowed just one earned run in 3.1 innings. Jackson Burns tossed the final 1.2 innings and struck out three, didn’t walk a batter and allowed one earned run.
Calumet was charged with four errors in the contest.
