Cincinnati Reds spring training: Reds drop pair of games; Jose Trevino exits with injury
GLENDALE, Arizona — The Cincinnati Reds (9-11-1) dropped a pair of Cactus League road games Friday in a split-squad doubleheader, losing 2-1 in Scottsdale, Arizona, to the Arizona Diamondbacks and 7-3 in Glendale to the Chicago White Sox.
Reds catcher Jose Trevino leaves game after foul tip
A few hours after the Cincinnati Reds revealed that starting catcher Tyler Stephenson will open the season on the injured list because of a “low-grade oblique strain,” backup Jose Trevino took a foul tip off his throwing hand and left the game in Scottsdale.
The severity of Trevino’s injury was not immediately clear.

Both Reds starters battled control
Friday's starters for the Reds, Chase Petty (four) and Graham Ashcraft (four) walked eight batters in 5 2/3 combined innings – Petty navigating around enough traffic to allow just one run in his three innings of work.
Graham Ashcraft ‘didn’t have legs under me’
Against the White Sox, Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft struggled in his fifth start of the spring, allowing five of the first six batters to reach base in the first inning before being lifted, then using spring rules to re-enter in the second and pitch just two more innings.
He gave up three runs on three hits and four walks, throwing 63 pitches in the abbreviated outing. Two of the walks and all three hits – including the first of Brandon Drury’s two home runs in the game – came in the first inning, when Ashcraft also got a double-play grounder.
“It felt like I didn’t really have my legs under me today. My stuff was just kind of sporadic,” he said. “My arm felt good. Everything felt good other than my legs.”
Up next for Cincinnati Reds
Opening Day starter Hunter Greene gets the start Saturday for the Cincinnati Reds in their 4:05 p.m. (ET) Cactus League game against Jonathan India’s Kansas City Royals at Goodyear Ballpark (WLW-700 radio). Former Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen starts for the Royals.
