Southwestern drops home-opener to Boyle
The Southwestern Warriors began their home slate of games this season with a tough match against regional contender Boyle County on Tuesday. After their offensive explosion on Monday, the Warriors couldn’t muster the same amount of hitting as they fell in a blowout 13-1.
Clifton Sawyers got the lone RBI for the Warriors in the loss, with Jonas Gallagher, Jonah Brock, Michael Miller, Chandler Taylor and Pierce Jasper also adding hits. Jackson Couch earned the loss on the mound, going four innings while allowing eight runs (with five of them earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. Benjamin Stewart went one and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (with four of them earned) on two hits with three strikeouts as well.
Southwestern falls to 1-1 and will be back on the road on Thursday to take on Clinton County.
Somerset opens season with back-to-back wins
The Somerset Briar Jumpers opened their 2025 campaign with back-to-back home games on Tuesday and Wednesday and were able to earn victories in both.
On Tuesday, the Jumpers squared off with the Knox Central Panthers and were able to breeze away with a 10-3 victory. Kole Grundy led the way with two RBI’s and a home run in the win. Isaiah Lewis added two RBI’s as well, with Connor Roberts and Caynon Sizemore each adding one RBI apiece. Raygan New and Josh Bruner each added a hit as well. Lewis earned the win on the mound, going four innings while allowing three earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Roberts went three innings in relief, allowing no runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Then on Wednesday, the Jumpers hosted Madison Central and were able to prevail in a pitching duel 1-0. The lone run was drove in by New on a triple. Lewis added two hits for the Jumpers. Grundy was fantastic in his start on the mound, earning the win and going all seven innings while allowing no runs on just four hits with four strikeouts.
Somerset begins their season 2-0 and will next travel to Danville on Thursday.
Cougars shut out Williamsburg
The Somerset Christian Cougars began their season at home on Tuesday against the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets. In what was a strong performance on the mound by the Cougars and pitcher Isaiah Hensley, Somerset Christian was able to win 4-0.
Jackson Case and Gavin Lewis each had an RBI to lead the Cougars, with Austin Reed and Trey Hogan also adding hits. Hensley went the full seven innings in his win on the mound, allowing just two hits while striking out 15 batters.
Somerset Christian also earned a forfeit win for their scheduled game on Thursday against Danville Christian, meaning they begin their season with a 2-0 record. The Cougars will next square off with Somerset in a crosstown game on Friday.
Warriors bounce back against Clay County
After dropping their season-opener against South Laurel, the Southwestern Warriors were at home on Tuesday to take on the Clay County Lady Tigers. It was a bounce-back performance for the Warriors as well, as they were able to take down Clay County by a final score of 10-4.
Halle Norvell led the way with three RBI’s and a home run, with Abigail Whitescarver also adding three RBI’s. Chloe Carroll, Kylie Dalton and Macie Gwin each added one RBI apiece. Brynn Troxell and Arabella Lowery each had a hit as well. Whitescarver earned the win on the mound, going six innings while allowing four runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts. Jayla Singleton earned the save, pitching the final inning and allowing no hits with two strikeouts.
Southwestern improves to 1-1 and will travel to Boyle County on Thursday.
Lady Jumpers fall to Madison Central
Somerset took care of business in their season-opener, but unfortunately had to contend with a tough Madison Central team on Tuesday on the road. Despite managing to stay with their opponents through the first inning, the Jumpers were outscored 3-0 over the final six innings in a 5-2 loss.
Aleah Wesley led the way with two RBI’s on one hit, with Emry Pyles adding the lone other hit. Reagan Childers earned the loss on the mound, allowing five runs (with two of those earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts.
Somerset falls to 1-1 and will be back on the road on Thursday to take on Wayne County.
