Southwestern takes down Pulaski in first rivalry clash
For the first time under the KHSAA, Pulaski County and Southwestern met in boys’ volleyball on Tuesday in the first game of what is sure to be an epic rivalry, in time that is. While a majority of players are still learning and growing their game, Tuesday’s clash was a fantastic match that went all the way to five sets, before the visiting Warriors came away with a hard-earned 3-2 victory (25-23, 25-20,m23-25, 25-27, 15-12).
The teams went back and forth over the course of the first set, before kills from senior Ian Paris and junior Shubh Patel gave the Warriors an edge late. The Maroons ended up giving the first set away to their rivals, as an attacking error put the Warriors ahead 1-0 with a 25-23 first set win.
Once again, the second set started out close before a wave of kills from Paris, as well as an ace from Patel, brought Southwestern within just one point of taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. It was once again the Maroons that gave the set to their opponents, as an error of the serving variety handed the second set to Southwestern 25-20.
It really began to look like the Warriors were going to run away with the sweep early on in the third set after some kills from seniors Paris, Jackson Flynn and Jonah McKnight. However, the Maroons were able to hang in there and eventually took a lead late. A late surge from the Warriors was not enough to get them back in front, as Pulaski took the third set 25-23 and prevented the sweep.
Southwestern opened up a massive 18-13 lead over the Maroons in the fourth set following a kill from Paris. The Maroons, playing on their home court, would not quit though and after three straight kills from Jackson Parmalee and two straight attacking errors by the visitors Pulaski held a 25-24 advantage. The first team to go up by two would capture the set and it didn’t take Pulaski long, as they launched out two straight kills to win the fourth set 27-25 and force the match into a fifth set.
Pulaski had a clear boost in momentum at this point and it showed early on in the fifth set, as they got out a 10-6 lead. That mattered little to the Warriors though and after they got refocused, they closed the match on a 9-2 run with kills coming from Paris and McKnight. A service error handed the match to the visitors as Southwestern took the fifth set 15-12 and won the first KHSAA-sanctioned rivalry clash between the two programs.
Southwestern improves to 4-3 with the win, with wins also coming against Casey County, Letcher County Central and Holy Cross (Louisville), and losses coming against Henry Clay, Lafayette and West Jessamine. The Warriors will next compete in a tri-match at East Jessamine against the hosting Jaguars and Powell County on Friday.
Pulaski falls to 1-1 with the loss and will next travel to Casey County next Tuesday.
