Saints schedule private workout with underrated BYU draft prospect

The New Orleans Saints seem to have keen interest at the edge rusher position during this year's pre-draft process and have found themselves very intrigued by a two-time All-Big 12 player out of BYU.

Cougars edge rusher Tyler Batty has a private workout scheduled with the Saints, per Tony Pauline of SportsKeeda. Pauline also writes that Batty has been drawing a lot of interest from teams despite the lack of sack production during his time at BYU. He previously stood out at the East-West Shrine Bowl.

At 6-foot-6, 271-pounds Batty has outstanding measurables for a player at his position. Posting a 4.78 40-time to go along with 27 reps in the bench press at the combine, Batty displays a great deal of athleticism and strength to play multiple spots along the defensive line. His 8.88 Relative Athletic Score is impressive, and clears the Saints' benchmarks, but Batty finished his 53-game career at BYU with 224 total tackles, 34 TFLs and 16.5 sacks. That's respectable, too.

With the Saints transitioning to a 3-4 defensive front, a player like Batty could give them some flexibility when lining him up. At his size, Batty fits the prototype to play as a 4i in this scheme, while also having enough athleticism to play as an outside rusher. As a projected day three selection, one could compare this type of selection to former Saints defensive end Trey Hendrickson. Although Hendrickson's 29.5 sacks at FAU skew the comparison, both players share similar profiles overall. Batty is a potential late-round developmental player to watch for New Orleans.
