The New Orleans Saints could find themselves in a quarterback quandary heading into the 2025 NFL draft and upcoming season.
Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Saints quarterback Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury. Now, the veteran is faced with a decision about surgery that could jeopardize his entire 2025 season.
Carr, 34, was hoped to be the franchise quarterback for New Orleans when picked up before the 2023 season. It has not worked out. After going 9-8 in his first year in the Big Easy, he was limited to 10 games this season before being shelved by injury.
Derek Carr's 2024 season ended prematurely with a fractured non-throwing hand. Now, a shoulder injury has put his availability for 2025 in doubt. https://t.co/pxfTTJH0KL

The Saints have Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, and Ben DeNucci behind Carr. They all have NFL experience, but none have shown the ability to be depended on to lead the team back to the playoffs.
That opens the door for New Orleans to make a quarterback pick in the upcoming draft. The Saints pick ninth. With the quarterback market basically vacant, would New Orleans try and pull a trade to move up for one of the top talents available?
Cam Ward figures to be headed for Tennessee. Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart could be within reach.
