There's nothing that immediately jumps off the page with University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Konata Mumpfield.
He measured in at the combine at 5-11, 186 pounds. He doesn't have particularly long arms and his athletic testing was unremarkable. However, watching him play football makes it clear why the San Francisco 49ers wanted to hold a pre-draft meeting with him. They did so virtually according to the Draft Network's Justin Melo.
Mumpfield doesn't bring any of the measurables we typically associate with strong WR prospects, but that makes what he does on tape more impressive. He is open a lot thanks to some nasty route running that highlights his game. When he is forced to make contested catches he does so more effectively than his frame suggests he might, and his body control shines on throws down the field. Mumpfield also has a really good feel to find soft spots in zones when lining up both outside and in the slot.
After one year at the University of Akron where he hung up 751 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman, Mumpfield transferred to Pitt where he put together a consistently strong three seasons. With the Panthers he caught 154 passes for 1,940 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has experience lining up at various spots in Pitt's offense. According to Pro Football Focus, he played in 744 snaps in the slot and 899 out wide.
Between his route running prowess and toughness, it's easy to see where the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan might love to take a late-round flier on a receiver with a ton of experience pro-ready tools.
