It's been a hectic 24 hours covering the New Orleans Saints, with a new report coming out that starting quarterback Derek Carr is dealing with a major shoulder injury which puts his 2025 season in jeopardy. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the news, and shared more details in a follow-up TV spot.
"Sources say Derek Carr is now dealing with a significant shoulder injury, believed to be a throwing shoulder injury, that he has now been seeking medical opinions on. From what I understand is a decision is coming from Carr on how he's going to proceed, and yes, surgery is an option. If Derek Carr did in fact have surgery it would likely take him off the field at the very least the start of the 2025 season," Rapoport said.
It's a weird situation. Carr hasn't made many public appearances this offseason -- he and his brother David were seen strutting around at Fresno State's spring game, and he's made sporadic posts on Instagram highlighting family vacations in the offseason. He hasn't been wearing a sling or moving with any obvious discomfort. We have a lot of questions about the nature of this injury and what a treatment plan looks like, but for now it's very uncertain.
Rapoport added: "We do not yet as of right know the immediate future of Carr nor is it clear how and when this injury happened. Believed to have occurred at some point last season. Remember, he was dealing with a broken non-throwing hand to end his season, and that was it. It's unclear if he had the injury at that time."
What we do know is that the Saints were aware of his condition, and presumably were trying to keep it under wraps in the final weeks leading up to the 2025 NFL draft. If they have plans to draft a quarterback as Carr's replacement, the whole NFL world just became aware of it.
