Russell Wilson has the Giants on the cusp of the NFL’s most confusing QB room
From 2019 to 2024, the New York Giants rostered arguably the NFL's worst starting quarterback in Daniel Jones. For one of the league's traditional marquee franchises, Jones was a picture of overdrafted and overwhelmed incompetence. His various backups, including glorified Italian meme Tommy DeVito, weren't really much better.
Heading into the 2025 season, the Giants will not possess the NFL's worst quarterback depth chart in any fashion. But after signing almost-washed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal with $10.5 million guaranteed on Tuesday, they are shaping up to have the weirdest.
In a way, that's commendable progress ... I guess?
ESPN Sources: The Giants and Super Bowl-winning QB Russell Wilson reached agreement today on a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed. You see, even after adding Wilson, it remains unclear precisely what Giants' quarterback plan is.
That's because they already added the enigmatic Jameis Winston, a veteran passer capable of throwing a laser touchdown to his receiver or the other team on any given play in between some of the goofiest soundbites imaginable. And at this point in time, New York still owns the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
This is where it gets potentially awkward. Signing Wilson now might mean the Giants are laser-focused on adding premium talent at a non-quarterback position in late April. Think of Penn State's relentless pass-rusher, Abdul Carter, or Colorado's dynamic dual-position player, Travis Hunter. It wouldn't be the worst idea for the Giants to ride out another rebuilding (or tanking?) year with stopgap like Wilson and Winston while building up the rest of New York's core roster. Then, perhaps, then they're in a position to draft Arch Manning as their actual quarterback of the future next spring. Bonus PR points would go to the Giants if they can avoid Archie Manning and his sons throwing a public temper tantrum about their scion not going to New York just like in (ahem) 2004.
Still, for now, most signs point to the Giants really liking Colorado signal caller Shedeur Sanders. For one, our Christian D'Andrea has Sanders joining the Giants in his latest NFL mock draft. For the other, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the idea of Sanders wearing Giants blue is starting to seem like an inevitability from all sides. Factor in his influential football father, Deion, really wanting him to play in the Big Apple, and it just might be destiny.
This realistic scenario would give the Giants Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Shedeur Sanders in one of the weirdest professional quarterback rooms from top to bottom that I can remember. That's three extremely unique personalities and play styles all in one place and all at different stages of their respective careers. While I'm not sure how potent it would be on the field, at least right away as Sanders develops, there's no doubt in my mind it would have the potential for peak football comedy on a daily basis.
The Giants have a chance to do the funniest thing ever. As someone who lives for drama, here's hoping they don't waste it.
