Roundup: Newark's Taylor leaps to long jump win in home invite

Payton Taylor covered a distance of 20 feet, 8 inches Saturday to win the long jump for the Newark boys track team during the Wildcats’ annual Newark Invitational.

Granville’s Corbin Bell took runner-up in the 400-meter dash, crossing in 50.95 seconds, and he joined Cohen Stump, Nolan Cheney and Callum Sproul on the runner-up 3,200 relay (8:23.08). Northridge’s Bodhi Foster also took runner-up in the pole vault (12-6).

Newark’s Roy Price in the 110 hurdles (15.16), Northridge’s Nathan Burkey in the 300 hurdles (40.94) and Granville’s Dylan Layne in the discus (127-10) each placed third.

In the girls meet, Granville’s Ayla Cook won the 100 hurdles (16.27), and she also joined Avery Ogg, Hope Mahl and Charlotte Turner on the winning 800 relay (1:47.88). Annie McCracken won the pole vault (11-6), and Tory Reynolds matched her in the long jump (15-7.75) for the third-place Blue Aces, who totaled 81 points, trailing Bishop Watterson’s 94 and Fairfield Union’s 85. 

Northridge’s Ava Travis won the 400 (1:00.61) and took runner-up in the 200 (27.05). Teammate Courtney BeVier took runner-up in the 1,600 (5:32.69).

Newark’s Odessa Andrews-Barreau added a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles (16.32). Granville’s Nora Carrington placed third in the long jump (15-4).

Watkins boys tie for second

The Watkins Memorial boys won four events, tying for runner-up in the team standings during their Watkins Icebreaker.

Ray Hardiman won the 100-meter dash, crossing in 10.93 seconds, and John Apel matched him in the 200 (21.60). That duo also joined Joe McIntosh and Connor Black on the winning 1,600 relay (3:30.24) as the Warriors totaled 111 points, tying Hilliard Darby and trailing Pickerington North’s 130.

Troy Blankenship added a win in the 300 hurdles (42.44) and placed third in the 110 hurdles (16.71) for Watkins. Teammates David Martin (11 feet, 6 inches) and Matthew Biedron (10-6) took second and third in the pole vault.

Johnstown’s Cameron Beverick placed third in the 800 (2:02.05).

In the girls meet, Watkins’ Kate Michael won the 1,600 (5:32.15) and joined Ellah Bigham, Kamryn Caldwell and Anna Stewart on the runner-up 1,600 relay (4:23.80). Stewart, Caldwell, Megan Keating and Kadence Gorrell also took runner-up in the 800 relay (1:52.98). 

Placing third for the Warriors were Bigham in the long jump (14-11.75), Emily Whitmer in the 5,000 (19:22.71) and Jessica Westlake, Nylah Harris, Aaista Poudel and Jocelyn Shardell in the shuttle hurdles (1:19.48).

Newark wins at home

Landon Sifford made five saves for Newark in a 12-1 victory against visiting Lima Senior.

Sifford was protected by Cam Davis, Harrison Walsh, Blake Tosi, Jay Ssebabi, Doug Simpson and Force Byrnes as the starting defenders for the Wildcats (4-2) blanked the Spartans. Scoring were Ohenaba Asenso with four goals, Max Frost three, Drayson Peterson two and Davis, Hunter Berona and Brandon Sherman one each.
