CUMBERLAND — WVU Potomac State College scored 21 runs across the first three innings, leading to a 21-0 five-inning shutout of Allegany College in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.
The Catamounts (22-3, NJCAA 11-0 Region 20) led the second game of the scheduled twinbill 8-0 in the top of the third before the game was suspended due to rain.
“We’ve been playing good ball all year,” Potomac State head coach Chris Greise said. “We’re just continuing to do it. We have bats from top to bottom, we have defenders from top to bottom and we have a good pitching staff.”
In the first game, Potomac State led 10-0 after two innings before scoring 11 runs in the third.
The Catamounts hit four home runs in the game, beginning with Braylee Corbin in the top of the first.
The Petersburg graduate sent a fly ball to left that banged off the scoreboard for a three-run shot.
Skyla Compton was up next on a fly ball deep to left in the top of the second, also going for three runs.
In the top of the third, Lindsay Mowry and Jamie Kelly went back-to-back.
Mowry sent a fly ball into right center for a two-run blast before Kelly followed on a fly ball to right field for a solo shot.
“They’re a very good team,” Allegany head coach Rick Twigg said. “In order to compete with them, we have to not make mistakes. Really have to hit the ball. Chloe (Greise) is the best pitcher in the conference. There’s not a whole lot we can do.”
Compton finished 4 for 4 with six RBIs while Mowry went 3 for 4 with four RBIs.
Corbin drove in five runs off two hits while Kelly recorded two hits, two RBIs and two walks.
Eva Ochoa had three hits, an RBI and a walk and Shaleigh Dickinson added two hits and a walk.
Mowry stole three bases while Ochoa, Kelly and Compton each swiped a pair.
“We feed off each other, so when something happens we just keep feeding,” coach Greise said. “We’re predators, so we attack the pitch and keep attacking.”
Chloe Greise (Bishop Walsh) only allowed one hit and one walk in five innings while striking out 10 batters.
On Sunday against Penn Highlands, Greise broke the career strikeout record with 320.
The Trojans (7-11, 3-6 Region 20) only hit came in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball single from Nakiya Copes.
“They’ve got thump, and we don’t have very much thump,” Twigg said. “We rely on base hits, extra base hits. But we haven’t come into the thump part of it yet.”
In the second game, Kelly, Compton and Corbin each went deep prior to the suspension.
Kelly hit a two-run shot in the top of the second before Compton blasted a grand slam to right center.
Corbin sent the first pitch of the third inning deep to center for a solo shot.
“We have power from top to bottom,” coach Greise said. “The leadoff can hit them, the 12th member on the bench can hit them. We’re chasing some team things, some individual stuff as far as records go.”
The Catamounts have now won 19 consecutive games and received votes in the latest NJCAA Division II softball poll.
“They lean on each other, some days it’s not your day and someone steps up,” Greise said. “They’re family oriented, they support each other from top to bottom. That’s the biggest thing, it’s not a me thing, it’s a we thing.”
Coach Greise said the teams will try and resume the second game on Tuesday.
Both teams are scheduled to play doubleheaders on Wednesday.
Allegany heads to Harford at 1 p.m. while Potomac State travels to Howard at 3 p.m.
