The upcoming 2025 NFL draft is not considered one of the strongest at the top. Part of that is because of the questions surrounding the quarterback class. Last year's class featured six quarterbacks selected among the first 12 picks, including the first three. Outside of Cam Ward, there are no clear-cut top-10 quarterbacks this year.
This is a strong draft for edge rushers, defensive tackles, and running backs. If you're a team like the Washington Commanders, who do not need a quarterback, but need a pass rusher and could use a defensive tackle, running back, or cornerback, you are in luck. Unfortunately for Washington, a terrific season has the Commanders picking at No. 29 in the first round. And thanks to three separate trades for veterans, Washington holds only five picks in this month's draft.
The good news for Washington is that by picking No. 29, it's a good spot for teams trying to trade back into the first round. Most teams like coming back into the first round to get the fifth-year option, especially for a quarterback. With so much hype around Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart recently, the Commanders' spot could be a popular one come draft night.
Many draft analysts consider the strength of the draft from the 20s to the 60s. So, in theory, if Washington were to move back and out of the first round, they could land a comparable player and add more picks. Field Yates of ESPN recently said the Commanders were the most likely team to trade down in the first round, in his opinion, of course.
General manager Adam Peters has resourcefully added to his roster through trades this offseason, landing Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel Sr. for modest draft pick compensation. The Commanders are down to only five picks and are in the sweet spot -- No. 29 overall -- where a team slotted early in Round 2 could want to move up for a coveted prospect and the fifth-year option that comes with all first-round contracts. If the Giants or Browns do not take a quarterback early in Round 1, could they give Peters a call?
While the Commanders' most significant need is an edge rusher, they aren't in a position where they must draft one at No. 29. Moving down would be the best of both worlds for Washington, as it can add more picks and still land a good player.
Adam Peters is more than happy to see Dart's stock rise as the draft approaches, as it could be good news for the Commanders.
