ALTOONA, Pa. – The Bishop Carroll Catholic girls basketball team earned its first PIAA final four appearance in seven years via its 60-47 victory over Williamsburg in an all-District 6 quarterfinal contest Saturday at Altoona Fieldhouse.

“It’s amazing,” said Huskies sophomore Adelyn Myers after scoring 12 points. “We lost a lot of big forwards and point guards from last year, so it was kind of iffy if we were actually going to make it to states.
“But we’ve made it really far and I think we can go even further.”
Freshman Emily Lucko produced a game-best 23 points, with three 3-pointers, as District 6 runner-up Bishop Carroll secured a spot opposite District 6 champion Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic.
The Marauders beat 6-3 St. Joseph’s Academy 66-48 in Saturday's second game at Altoona to set a rematch against the Huskies. The Marauders won 50-27 Jan. 3 and 61-44 over Bishop Carroll in the Feb. 26 district championship game.
“We all worked as a team to get the lead,” Lucko said. “From there, we just really wanted to win, and we were focusing on keeping everything going well.”
The Huskies (21-7) also got 12 points from sophomore Ava Pablic, whose defensive role against District 6 fourth-place Williamsburg’s all-state point guard LeeAnna Royer was a key factor Saturday.
“Ava Pablic is really good at defense,” the Huskies’ Myers said. “I know No. 10 (Royer) was really good. We played games against her years ago in the summer league. We know she’s that type of player. We worked hard to defend her and it worked.”
Royer finished with five points before fouling out with 4:12 remaining and the Huskies holding a 48-36 advantage. She was 2 of 10 from the field.
“We tried to shut 10 down,” Bishop Carroll coach John Strittmatter said of Royer. “That was our goal. I thought we did a pretty good job with her. We didn’t let her dictate the game.
“I’m always telling my players, when we’re on defense, we dictate how they play offense. When we’re on offense, we dictate how they’re going to play defense. The kids buy into that simple logic.”
The Huskies led 12-7 after the first quarter and 25-16 at halftime.
Bishop Carroll started the second half with a spurt that pushed the margin to 33-20 after Pablic made a 3-pointer at 4:48.
Williamsburg closed the third with a 16-14 scoring advantage to make it 39-32 entering the final eight minutes.
Bishop Carroll’s 21-15 scoring advantage in the fourth put the game out of reach.
Sophomore Levada Gorsuch led Williamsburg with 19 points and eight rebounds. Senior Anastasia Ranalli added 12 points.
“This is exciting,” Strittmatter said. “We haven’t been this far for a long time. To have a young group play so well and play together, that’s the nice thing about these girls.”
