Organ Mountain softball's Abigail Sanchez has been voted the Las Cruces Sun-News Athlete of the Week for March 24-29.
Sanchez was among 10 baseball and softball nominees from Las Cruces, Organ Mountain and Centennial. Fellow nominees included Organ Mountain baseball's Leo Hernandez, Las Cruces baseball's Nick Rojas and Bubba Urenda, Centennial baseball's Gilberto Torres and Cole Alons, Organ Mountain softball's Hannah Justus and Centennial softball's Aaliyah Betancourt and Amanda Valles.
Sanchez received a majority of the vote at 51.72%, collecting 19,819 total votes. Leo Hernandez was her closest competitor in the voting, receiving 42.02% of it at 16,103 total votes.
Sanchez hit a three-run double against Deming, helping the Knights secure a 9-6 victory at home. A sophomore, she is batting a .286 average this season with two runs scored, eight hits and eight RBIs. Sanchez has also registered a .986 fielding percentage with 69 putouts.
Organ Mountain's victory over Deming started its current four-game winning streak, extended by defeating Gadsden in a three-game district series. This included two wins over the Panthers on Thursday. The Knights (9-3-1, 3-0 District 3-5A) take on Alamogordo in their next district series, a three-game set starting with a single road game at 5 p.m. Monday and a home doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Thursday.
