No. 4 FSU baseball's comeback efforts fall short as Miami ties rivalry series with win
Florida State baseball fell to Miami 9-6 on Friday, the Seminoles' first loss in ACC play this season.
Miami jumped on Jamie Arnold early in a rare tough start for the lefty. He allowed a career-high six earned runs on seven hits, while only recording two strikeouts in four innings of work.
The Seminoles (19-3) struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities, with 13 runners left on base and eight strikeouts, a jarring change from the 14 hits and six home runs the team hit in Thursday's 14-1 win.
FSU did, however, get out to an early 2-1 lead, but missed opportunities to score more. A bases-loaded one-out walk from Myles Bailey scored the game's first run before two consecutive outs left three runners on base.
A Miami sac fly from Daniel Cuvet tied the game at one before a Brody DeLamielleure solo home run snatched back the lead for FSU in the second, 2-1 heading into the home half of the inning.
The Hurricanes never faltered, scoring two in the second with a Derek Williams solo home run and a fielder choice scoring another to make it 3-2 Miami.
Bobby Marsh doubled in the third to make it 4-2 before the Hurricanes scored three runs in the fifth inning to put some breathing space between the two teams. Miami remained in front 7-2 until the seventh inning when Marsh hit a solo home run to make it a six-run game.
FSU showed signs of life in the eighth, loading the bases for Alex Lodise with two outs. The junior delivered a two-RBI single to cut the lead to four, however, Max Williams hit a fly ball that went just shy of the warning track to end the inning.
The Hurricanes added an insurance run in the eighth with a sac fly to make it a 9-4 game.
FSU would load the bases again in the ninth. DeLamielleure hit an RBI single and a wild throw to first base on a fielder's choice hit by Hunter Carns scored another to make it 9-6.
Gage Harrelson came to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third, but he struck out to leave the Seminoles' comeback efforts short and tie the series at one apiece.
