New Bears DE Dayo Odeyingbo discusses playing opposite Montez Sweat
New Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen made it clear that the focus on defense will be affecting the quarterback. The Bears are also banking on newcomer Dayo Odeyingbo, who signed a three-year, $48 million contract last week, to reach his potential.
Odeyingbo joins a defensive line group that features Pro Bowler Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter and fellow newcomer Grady Jarrett. Odeyingbo will be tasked with leading the charge off the edge with Sweat, who he's eager to learn from.
"He's dominant on the D-line and it's exciting to be able to play across from him and learn from him," Odeyingbo said. "To be able to learn from him in person, be a teammate, learn from him and help him grow, it's going to be exciting. And then along with the other guys on the D-line … I'm excited to get to work with them [and] grind with them."
In 61 career games, including 19 starts, Odeyingbo has totaled 106 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks and five forced fumbles with the Indianapolis Colts. He also brings versatility to the defensive line, as he can line up off the edge or along the interior.
Following the release of DeMarcus Walker -- and Chicago's current lack of depth at defensive end -- Odeyingbo is slotted in as the starter opposite Sweat. Odeyingbo is only 25, and he'll learn from one of the best in Sweat as he looks to take the next step.
