Former Bears receiver Velus Jones Jr. finds new home in NFC
Former Chicago Bears receiver Velus Jones Jr. has found a new home, signing a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Jones was selected by Chicago in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. He never really caught on with the Bears, be it at wide receiver or running back (which he converted to last summer) or even return specialist. His fumbling issues, both on kickoffs and punts, proved to be his downfall.
After muffing his first kickoff in the 2024 season opener against the Tennessee Titans, Jones was benched and a subsequent healthy scratch in the ensuing weeks. In three seasons with the Bears, Jones had 19 rushes for 165 yards and one touchdown, as well as 12 receptions for 135 yards and a score in 27 games with two starts.
Jones was waived on Oct. 25 and later landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad on Oct. 29 before being signed to the Carolina Panthers' active roster on Dec. 10.
Now, Jones is with his fourth team in as many seasons where he's looking to carve out a role for himself and stick with a new team.
